The Cholesterol Medication Dilemma

Statins are the most toxic, ineffective and profitable medication in history.

  • From 2003 to 2012 the percentage of adults aged 40 and older that used statins increased from 20 percent to 28 percent.
  • $4.4 billion was spent on stain medication Crestor in 2011 while another $7.7 billion was spent on Lipitor.
  • If we adopt the new (2013) Cholesterol lowering guidelines 56 million American adults would be eligible to take a statin.

According to these stats you would think we are all suffering statin deficiency!

Are we suffering from a Statin Deficiency?

Statins are cholesterol lowering agents and they work by poisoning the enzyme HMG CoA reductase which is found in all cells.  By poisoning this pathway to lower cholesterol it effects the brain and nervous system as they contain the highest concentration of cholesterol in the body.  Often people will experience brain fog, dementia, depression, Parkinson’s disease, memory loss, neuropathy and ALS, all are documented adverse effects of statin use.

Statins are also associated with muscle disorders, as not only cholesterol production is inhibited by statins but so is the vitamin like substance coenzyme CoQ10 the highest concentration of CoQ10 is found in the muscles of the body.  Patients present with muscle pain, stiffness, tightness and congestive heart failure.  CHF is increasing at epidemic rates and could be due to statin use, particularly in the elderly.

Cholesterol basically gets a bad rap and is thought to be a dangerous substance that cause plaque in the arteries and cause heart attacks.  But in fact, every single cell in the human body needs and requires an optimal amount of cholesterol in order to function.  We simply cannot live without adequate cholesterol levels.

First-line therapy should always be considered before starting a statin. Implementing a whole food nutrition plan, exercise and adequate water intake is a great place to start.

Consulting with a Nutritionist or Functional Medicine practitioner can assist with investigating other imbalances in the body that are the underlying deficiencies, toxic burden=liver burden, inflammation?   Is leptin resistance present?  Blood sugar metabolism?  It all matters addressing cholesterol does not mean you have to take dangerous medications that will have lasting negative effects.

If you are currently on a cholesterol medication you need to consider being on a high quality CoQ10 300mg daily.  There are many alternative ways to address the underlying issues of elevated cholesterol that are safe and effective.

Before you ever stop taking a medication prescribed by your doctor it is recommended you first discuss your concerns with your prescribing physician.
